Butterflies and smiles: new beginnings at Aarhus University TECH
Over a thousand new students began their academic journey this week at Aarhus University’s Faculty of Technical Sciences – across campuses in Aarhus, Herning, and Viborg. From budding software engineers to future veterinarians, the day marked the start of something bigger: a shared experience.

The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation, laughter, and open arms as the doors opened for the new academic year. Across all three campuses, first-year students were greeted by enthusiastic tutors, lecturers, and fellow students ready to welcome them into the community.
“It’s a special day for you – but also for us,” said Dean Eskild Holm Nielsen in his welcome speech.
He emphasized that beginning a degree is not just an academic step, but a courageous one:
“Having butterflies in your stomach is completely natural. It means you’ve chosen something that truly matters – and that you’re ready to take a step that gives your life direction.”

Building friendships from day one
Community spirit was what many students highlighted as the most important aspect of their new start. Whether enrolled in Software Technology in Aarhus or Animal Science in Viborg, students shared a common joy: the excitement of meeting new people and becoming part of something bigger.
Nicolai Søgaard, starting Software Technology after two gap years working as a lab assistant, said:
“I’ve always wanted to work with math, and I think this is a way to combine it with real life. I’m just incredibly excited to start learning again.”
Ida Stingsted, who has travelled in the US, New Zealand, and Indonesia, emphasized the social side:
“What I look forward to most is the social part—getting settled and learning again. I can’t wait to meet my classmates.”
For Maria Henriksen, starting in Health Technology, the motivation was deeply personal:
“I originally wanted to study medicine, but I’m not great with blood. I’ve always enjoyed math and physics, so this feels right. I’m looking forward to everything—both the intro days and getting into the coursework.”
In Viborg, Olivia Ingemann, a new Animal Science student, described her first impression:
“It’s been cozy. It feels small and safe here, and I don’t sense that big gap between teachers and students you might otherwise expect.”
Her classmate Tobias Thomassen looked forward to connecting theory with practice:
“I’m most excited to feel the passion from the teachers and to link the theory with hands-on experiences. The facilities seem great.”
And some expectations were more down-to-earth. “Honestly, I’m most excited for the beer! What else would you be excited for?” joked Hasse Emil Rudbæk, a new Electronics student in Aarhus.
A student life filled with purpose – and joy
For the Faculty of Technical Sciences, the start of the academic year is a highlight. It’s not only the beginning of students’ educational journey, but the foundation for the years ahead—both academically and socially.
“You’ll grow together with your fellow students,” Dean Eskild Holm Nielsen reminded them.
“Lean on each other when you’re curious, unsure, or need a pat on the back. It’s the community that makes your study time unforgettable.”
Ready for the road ahead
With the new semester, students step into a world of labs, lectures, and study groups—but just as importantly, into friendships and shared experiences that go far beyond campus walls.
At TECH, the journey has now begun. Welcome. We can’t wait to follow your path.
