Staff from the Department of Food Science at AU Foulum and staff at AU Årslev have long known that their workplace would move to Aarhus, when the Department consolidated its activities in the new buildings in Agro Food Park in Skejby near Aarhus, which will be ready for occupancy on 1 November.

In connection with the academic development process at Aarhus University, the senior management team decided back in 2011 that the Department of Food Science, which is divided between two locations in Foulum and Årslev, was to be consolidated in Aarhus within 3-5 years. The final decision on the location of the Department of Food Science was taken by the University Board in 2015. After this, the construction process was initiated, and the Department's new buildings are now almost ready.

With the new location in Agro Food Park, the university wants to increase opportunities to work with food companies. In addition, it is hoped to enhance public sector consultancy and that students will have even better opportunities to get involved in food research.

The move affects both scientific and technical-administrative staff. It primarily involves staff at the Department of Food Science, but also four employees at the ST Administrative Centre. Nine technical employees from the Plant, Food & Sustainability group will continue to deal with experiments and trials at AU Årslev, until a suitable site is found near Aarhus N, and therefore they are not affected by the move.

The units to move on 1 November 2019 are:

  • The following research groups from AU Årslev: Plants, Food & Sustainability (except the nine technical staff); Plant, Food & Climate; Food Quality Perception & Society; Differentiated & Biofunctional Foods, as well as the Secretariat in Årslev.
  • The following research groups from AU Foulum: Differentiated & Biofunctional Foods; Food Chemistry & Technology, as well as the Secretariat in Foulum.
  • Four staff from the ST Administrative Centre have been notified about the move.

A total of 84 employees will move in connection with the relocation from Årslev and Foulum. The relocation will be a significant change in terms of distance to work and travel times for 55 employees. These employees received consultation letters this week, with an offer of employment at the new location.

If an employee does not want to move to the new location, the employee will be laid off with the appropriate contractual notice.

Other employees, for whom the relocation of the workplace is not a significant change because of where they live, will instead receive a supplement to their employment contracts about the new place of employment from 1 November.

After the consultation period expires, the employees who accept the relocation will receive a supplement to their employment contracts about the new place of employment from 1 November.
